The Steve Saling ALS Residence & the Dapper McDonald ALS Residence in Chelsea, MA (Boston)
The Steve Saling & Dapper McDonald ALS Residences are 2 separate homes within the Leonard Florence Center for Living (LFCL) in Chelsea, Massachusetts near Boston. They are supported by Chelsea Jewish Lifecare. The LFCL was the 1st urban Green House® in America which means that, although licensed as skilled nursing homes, the architectural design is completely residential. The Saling & McDonald ALS Residences are homes in every way. There are 10 private bedrooms in each house, each bedroom with a full, private bathroom, surrounding a spacious living room with a fireplace, an open kitchen where all meals are prepared, and a dining room with a large, accessible table so that residents, staff, and guests gather like family for meals. The homes are bright with many windows looking out and a doorway to a private balcony or patio and garden where even the lawn is accessible by having a special reinforcing under the grass. Even though the homes are licensed as a full service nursing home, there are no nursing stations, no med carts, and no scrubs to be seen. They are not nursing homes designed to look residential. They are residences designed to offer skilled nursing services. There are licensed nurses in the houses 24 hours a day and the most compassionate caregivers who are trained in caring for pALS. All 10 rooms in each house have discrete in-wall suctioning and oxygen if needed. The entire home plus the elevator is fully automated and accessible. The automation system can be controlled with any wireless device that has a web browser including communication devices like Tobii and any brand of smart phone like the iPhone and Droid.
